Microsoft hosted its annual developer build conference in San Francisco this year, announcing that developers will be able to easily bring their iOS and Android apps to windows 10, as Microsoft attempts to encourage the adoption of its new “universal” operating system.
Microsoft also announced new software development kits that will allow developers to port existing apps into Windows universal apps that will have the ability to work across devices.
Horace Chow, Microsoft general manager for Hong Kong and Macau, told the South China Morning Post in an interview, “this is a huge breakthrough.”
The news comes at a crucial time as Microsoft is making a big push to encourage the adoption of its new Windows 10 operating system, currently in its beta stage.
In the past Microsoft has struggled to penetrate the mobile market against market leaders Android and Apple’s iOS. The South China Morning Post reports that experts have put lack of penetration by Microsoft down to their late entry into the mobile market, as well as the lack of apps found on Windows devices.
The company also announced in March that it would be offering its software free to the “millions” of users currently running Windows 7 or earlier, in the hopes that this will encourage users to adopt its mobile and tablet devices.
Microsoft also unveiled its Windows Holographic platform that will allow developers to create apps for Windows 10 that will work on the headset, the International Business Times reported. The company has not revealed any details of the HoloLens and the price of the headset is yet to be announced.
Earlier this year Immortal News reported that Microsoft announced that it would be providing free windows 10 upgrades to both genuine and non-genuine users of its software.
