Google Launches Sidewalk Labs To Improve Metropolitan Life

Google Sidewalk Labs

Google is certainly no stranger to the world of tangible technology with such notable forays as Chromecast and Glass, but now the tech giant is launching an independent company dedicated to innovating new real world technology intended to improve city life.

This new urban life improvement oriented tech startup, Sidewalk Labs, will be headed by the former deputy mayor of New York City of economic development and rebuilding for New York City, Daniel L. Doctoroff, the New York Times reported.

The idea for the company, according to the NY Times, was jointly conceived by Mr. Doctoroff, former chief executive of Bloomberg L.P., and a Google team led by chief executive Larry Page.

Google’s Larry Page described Sidewalks Labs on Google+ as a new company which “will focus on improving city life for everyone by developing and incubating urban technologies to address issues like cost of living, efficient transportation and energy usage.”

While Google is funding the company, Mr. Page referred to Google’s investment in the startup as “relatively modest.”

While this is a relatively modest investment and very different from Google’s core business, it’s an area where I hope we can really improve people’s lives, similar to Google[x] and Calico.

Page credited entrepreneur Adrian Aoun — who sold his last company, Wavii, to Google — with bringing Doctoroff on board, Forbes indicated in a report which made note of a statement written by Aoun on his Facebook page which read: “I’m proud to announce a project I’ve been working on, Sidewalk Labs, with my good friend Dan Doctoroff!”

In other Google coverage here at Immortal News, the tech giant has pledged $20 million towards helping the disabled, acquired Timeful and Twitter’s real-time data, and more recently, confirmed Android M as their upcoming mobile operating system at the last annual Google I/O conference.
