John Travolta Explains Why Scientology Is Criticized So Much

John Travolta

The Church of Scientology has intrigued both the public and media for years, and Hollywood superstar John Travolta has finally explained the reason behind it.

Travolta, 61, who became a scientologist in 1975, is of the opinion that scientology is one of the most controversial religions in the world because it is largely misunderstood.

“Mostly because it’s not understood,” Travolta said in response to a question on Monday’s Good Morning America show. “People really need to take time and read a book. You know? That’s my advice. You could read A New Slant on Life, you could read Dianetics. And I think if you really read it, you’ll understand it, but unless you do, you’ll speculate. And I think that’s a mistake to do that.”

The Pulp Fiction actor then revealed that his faith in Scientology has helped him immensely during some of the darkest hours of his life. Furthermore, he believes the primary reason why most people are hostile towards Scientology is because of its effectiveness.

Sometimes when something really works well it becomes a target (…) Forty years, for me, I’ve been part — and I’ve loved every minute of it. My family has done so well with it. You know? It’s a beautiful thing for me. I’ve saved lives with it, and saved my own life several times. Through the loss of my son, it helped me every step of the way for two years solid, and here I am talking to you because of it.

Travolta’s glowing remarks come in the wake of Alex Gibney’s scathing documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief which exposed some of the most bizarre practices of the Church of Scientology.

Founded in 1954 by sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology’s alleged practices – some of which include illegal surveillance and forcing members to sever all ties with family members – have been met with widespread criticism.
