Canon recently announced the release of the XC10, a new compact camcorder which shoots video in 4K quality and while it’s primarily being billed as a camcorder, it also captures 12-megapixel stills.

According to a company press release issued on April 8, 2015, Canon U.S.A. Inc.’s new Canon XC10 is not only compact, it’s also lightweight and capable of shooting in Full HD.

The company’s president and COO, Yuichi Ishizuka, was quoted in the release as having said that the company’s new camcorder enables “the virtually seamless capture of stunning 4K video with the added convenience of still image capture and 4K frame extraction,” which according to Yuichi, empowers users of the device “with multiple ways to share their artistic visions”.

With the introduction of the XC10 4K Digital Camcorder, we are looking to deliver a robust new camcorder that will allow for an ever expanding creative expression. Enabling the virtually seamless capture of stunning 4K video with the added convenience of still image capture and 4K frame extraction, XC10 users are empowered with multiple ways to share their artistic visions

The new camcorder which doubles as a camera utilizes the company’s proprietary DIGIC DV5 signal processor to support 5-axis image stabilization in full HD mode, slow and fast motion recording, and in-camera 4K video acquisition.

In order to ensure video and photo quality is up to par throughout the entire workflow, the device takes advantage of a couple of new codecs: XF-AVC Intra for recording in 4K and XF-ABC Long GOP when operating in Full HD.

It offers dedicated microphone and headphone jacks as well as a built-in microphone which offers professional sound monitor.

As for the viewing screen, the XC-10 boasts a Vari-Angle LCD monitor which features capacitive touch-panel technology.

If all of these features weren’t enough — based on the company’s feature-packed release, they’re seemingly not (enough) — the video camera also has dual-band 5GHz and 2.4 GHz wireless networks which allow for remote operation via a web browser, compatible smartphone or tablet. Through this wireless connection, users can preview recorded images without the hassle of removing media from the camcorder.
