Lynyrd Skynyrd Drummer Bob Burns Killed In Car Crash At Age 64

Lynyrd Skynyrd Drummer Bob Burns Dead

Bob Burns, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s original drummer, died in a single-car wreck in Georgia on Friday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The band — who burns drummed for in 1964, prior to their rise to fame — confirmed that the late drummer had died at the age of 64, NBC News reported.

Patrol spokesperson Tracey Watson indicated that the former drummer for the iconic 1970s rock band was driving northbound on Tower Ridge Road when his vehicle left the westside of the roadway while approaching a right curve, Cartersville Patch reported.

Watson was quoted in the Patch report as having said that Burns “struck a mailbox and a tree with the front of the vehicle” after having left the roadway.

Burns, who was 64-years-old at the time of his death, wasn’t wearing a seat-belt when he crashed at around 11:56 p.m. on April 3, according to Watson, who also indicated that “it was raining heavily at the time of the crash.”

The late drummer, who was with the southern hard-rock band when they recorded hits including “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” was the vehicle’s only occupant.

Authorities indicated that there was no probable cause to suggest that he was under the influence when the accident occurred.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd band, which was originally formed in Jacksonville, Florida back in 1966 as The Pretty Ones, is associated with acts including the likes of ZZ Top and Charlie Daniels.

The band is currently on tour with present band members Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke, Johnny Van Zant, Michael Cartellone, Mark Matejka, Peter Keys, and Johnny Colt.
