Police in Honduras have arrested two men over the slaying of beauty queen Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her sister, who disappeared last week.
The bodies of Alvarado and her older sister, Sofia Trinidad, 23, were found buried near a river close to Santa Barbara. Trinidad’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, confessed to shooting and burying the sisters, the BBC reported. Police believe he killed her in a fit of jealousy. An alleged accomplice, Aris Maldonado, has also been arrested.
Alvarado was crowned Miss Honduras in April. She was preparing to fly to London for the Miss World contest next month when she and her sister disappeared last Thursday. The bodies were discovered buried near the spa where the women disappeared while celebrating the boyfriend’s birthday.
Sometime on November 13, an argument broke out and Ruiz pulled a gun, shooting his girlfriend first and then shooting Alvarado as she tried to run. Alvarado was shot twice in the back, ABC News reported.
Police said Ruiz confessed to the crime and said he was jealous that Trinidad had danced with another man, the Los Angeles Times reported.

We had her gown ready and her traditional dress costumes. This is not a crime of passion; this is machismo. A lot of girls die this way, but because they’re not famous, it doesn’t get the attention and the crimes go unpunished.
Teresa Munoz, the girls’ mother, said Ruiz called her the morning after the disappearance acting strange and saying the women left the party in a car with a group of other people. She said her daughters were very trusting.
