Police To Change Protest Protocol After Dallas Shootings?

A gunman recently took over a peaceful protest in downtown Dallas, turning it into a bloody battle when he shot and killed five white police officers. The protest had taken place after the recent police shootings of black men in Minnesota and Louisiana. In light of these recent events, police forces may be considering new tactics to deal with protests.

According to Business Insider, a hundred people were arrested in Minnesota after officers showed up in riot gear and clashed with protestors who had blocked Interstate 94 in Saint Paul. Officers were pelted with rocks, and twenty-one police officers were injured in the process. The police has to resort to smoke bombs to clear the 200 person crowd.

Craig Lally, a representative of the Los Angeles police force spoke of the changes coming to future protests saying, ‘I guarantee they’re going to have sniper teams all along the march, cops with high-powered rifles.’

I think they’re going to have to be much more aware of their surroundings. The next march in Dallas, I guarantee they’re going to have sniper teams all along the march, cops with high-powered rifles, to see if anyone is going to be a copycat.

Meanwhile, Denver Police Chief Robert White has said that it is unlikely police tactics will change much, and that officers will continue to wear their regular uniform until an escalating situation requires them to wear riot gear.

The man who shot police officers in Dallas had served in Afghanistan and was a military veteran. According to The New York Times, President Obama spoke out about the incident saying there are ‘no possible justifications for these attacks or any violence towards law enforcement.’

We will learn more, undoubtedly, about their twisted motivations, but let’s be clear: There are no possible justifications for these attacks or any violence towards law enforcement.
