Lin-Manuel Miranda Leaving “Hamilton” This Summer

Lin-Manuel Miranda, writer and star of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, has confirmed that he will be departing the show. The announcement was made at the Tony Awards press room, where Miranda told reporters that he will definitely leave this summer, although no exact date was specified, reports Playbill.

Miranda jokingly said that since Alexander Hamilton is a role he can play for many years, audiences might get sick of always seeing him in the lead role. He did say, “I intend to drop in on this thing,” and that he had plans to drop in “over and over again.”

The actor is expected to go with the production when it moves to the West End in London, but there has been no official confirmation of this yet.

Following a high of 11 Tony Award wins, Hamilton announced on June 13 that it will open in the West End on October 17 at the Victoria Palace Theatre, after an extensive and expensive renovation of the venue.

Miranda spoke to the London Evening Standard in August 2015, saying, “We’re hoping it will happen sooner rather than later. My wife is always trying to get me to other countries so I would be honored to open the show in London.”

After the Tony Awards, the producers and creative team behind the successful show declined to comment on when their actors would depart the show, but said that official announcements would be made soon.

Hamilton is a revolutionary rap musical about Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers. It had dominated headlines and talk shows in the industry since it opened, and swept the Tony Awards with a win in every category it was nominated for, except Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Leading Actress in a Musical, making it the second production with the most Tony wins ever, next to The Producers.
