In a surprisingly unfortunate series of events, a man in Malibu found himself hospitalized after being struck by a bus, but not until after he nearly drove his SUV over the edge of a cliff.

According to local law enforcement, the man lost control of his silver SUV on Malibu Canyon Road and slammed into the guardrail and managed to smash right through it – leaving his vehicle hanging over the edge of a cliff.

Following the crash, the driver proceeded to exit his vehicle in a disoriented state and while he was standing on the road, a tour bus driving by struck him.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. The crash was, according to a supervising dispatcher with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, reported at approximately 4:40 p.m., CBS Los Angeles reports.

By approximately 5:45 p.m., emergency services had managed to clear the scene of the accident, reopening lanes on both sides of the road.

While the injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment, a local sheriff’s deputy with the Malibu-Lost Hills Station was cited by CBS LA as having indicated that the injuries sustained by the man were not believed to be life-threatening.

ABC 7 reports that the victim was not only breathing, but conscious when emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has launched an investigation into the series of crashes that shutdown traffic in both directions on Malibu Canyon Road on Saturday.

The crash took place approximately half-a-mile from the south end of the tunnel.
