If you’ve ever wondered who the main character is in the Game of Thrones series, mathematicians have finally come up with answer for you.

Through a combination of network science and statistical analysis, the researchers were able to document and analyze the connections between characters by finding and analyzing patterns in text.

Quartz‘s Adam Epstein, who spoke to the pair of researchers behind the analysis, explained that the researchers, Jie Shan and Andrew J. Beveridge, connected characters with one another by creating a link between the characters each time their names popped up within 15 words of each other.

The study, which is titled “Network of Thrones,” was published by the Mathematical Association of America.

Answering the question of who the main character is in the popular television series based on the written series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the study’s authors have come up with but one distinct possibility: Tyrion Lannister.

The fictional character that is Lannister was once the Hand of the King in the absence of his father, but he eventually found himself serving on the Small Council as the Master of Coin in the fantasy series by author George R. R. Martin.

Concluding their findings, the researchers whose calculations determined Lannister to be the main character wrote in their study, “Our analysis suggests that he is the true protagonist of the book.”Acting as the Hand of the King, Tyrion is thrust into the center of the political machinations of the capitol city. Our analysis suggests that he is the true protagonist of the book. What do you think, is Tyrion Lannister really the main character or could it be Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen?
