One of the most unthinkable tragedies occurred this past Wednesday when a South Carolina police officer responding to a fatal car crash discovered upon arriving at the scene that the victim was his wife.

Teresa Browder, wife of Wayne ‘Bubba’ Browder, died from injuries sustained to her head after her SUV was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle. Teresa, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was a 45-year-old nurse and the mother of three children.

Hospital spokeswoman Natalie Davis had kind words to say about Teresa, saying that the people at the hospital are better people having known Teresa.

We are better people and a better organization for having had the privilege of knowing and working with Teresa.

Teresa worked as a nurse for the past 25 years.

A spokesman from the sheriff’s office, released a statement saying the day was “tragic” not only for the officer but the entire agency.

Today was a tragic day for one of our officers, as well as our entire agency, as one of our family members deals with the loss of a loved one.

Police say that a 26-year-old man driving a 2008 Saturn SUV north when he careened across the center line of Lewis Road in Sumter County, striking Browder who was traveling south.

The crash involved a third vehicle as well. Both the driver of that vehicle and the 26-year-old man survived and were taken to the hospital.

One of Wayne Browder’s former coworkers, Benjamin Barfield, posted on Facebook, showing his support. “My thoughts are with a former colleague of mine Wayne ‘Bubba’ Browder at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office today”, he wrote.

In Law Enforcement you are required to respond to a lot of vehicle fatalities throughout your career and you gain experience on how to deal with them and how to handle yourself! No amount of training and experience can prepare you when arriving on a fatality scene of a loved one!

“We ask you keep the Browder family in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this horrible tragedy”, said Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
