31st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day Is Saturday Sept. 19

A picture is worth a thousand words they say, and it is easy to understand why when looking at the predominantly wordless California Coastal Commission’s promotional video for California Coastal Cleanup Day.

The camera slowly travels up alongside the beach, displaying what would otherwise be a serene and beautiful coast if it weren’t for the garbage littering the sand. All you can hear besides the waves gently crashing along the shore and the cry of the seagulls is the sound of the plastic trash being blown around by the wind.

Entitled “Coastal Cleanup Day 2015”, the video is meant to spark awareness of the pollution plaguing California’s beaches and to attract individuals who are willing to help preserve the sanctity of the area by participating in the scheduled cleanup.

This Saturday the community service event will take place, marking the 31st year the residents of the Golden State have come together to pick up the garbage. Last year, nearly 70,000 participants gathered and removed over 1 million pounds of trash up and down the California coast, according to The Malibu Times.

Steve Kinsey, chair of the California Coastal Commission and an organizer of the event was quoted as saying with the amount of trash being deposited into the ocean, “it’s imperative we all work together to find solutions to marine pollution.”

With 18.5 billion pounds of plastic entering the world’s oceans annually, it’s imperative we all work together to find solutions to marine pollution.

The volunteer opportunity will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will last for three hours.  Cleanup supplies will be provided at over 850 locations to those who want to try and make a difference. Some cleanup locations will also include inland rivers and lakes.

California residents are encouraged to view the Coastal Commission’s map to find a participating location this Saturday, and anyone interested can contact the phone number 1-800-HEAL-BAY for more information.
