Yvonne Craig, the actress who played Batgirl in the 1960s TV series Batman, has died at the age of 78.

Reuters reports that Craig passed away on Monday after a battle with breast cancer, according to her family. She died at her home in Pacific Palisades, California.

Craig is most famous for portraying the role of Batgirl, and her alter ego librarian Barbara Gordon, opposite Adam West’s Batman in 1967 and 1968.

Her acting career also included a memorable role on Star Trek in 1969. In the third season of the popular TV series, Craig played the crazed green slave girl who attempted to kill Captain Kirk opposite William Shatner.

Craig also appeared in episodes of Fantasy Island, The Mod Squad, The Lives of Dobie Gillis, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Craig eventually quit acting to pursue the real estate business with her sisters, reports The LA Times.

Craig’s family posted a statement on the actress’s official website, saying that she had wanted to keep her battle with cancer private to spend “all of her energy concentrating on winning her battle.”

The statement says that Craig’s cancer had metastasized to her liver and she underwent surgery last year to remove portions of her gallbladder and liver. She had been in chemotherapy treatments “almost continuously” since her diagnosis two years ago.

The actress fought her battle against cancer bravely, and never gave up, according to her family. “This didn’t dampen her sense of humor or her spirit,” the statement said.
