Rick Perry Charges: Texas Court Drops A Felony

Politics Texas

One of two charges facing Republican Presidential candidate Rick Perry has been dismissed by a Texas Appeals Court.

The Third Texas Court of Appeals indicated that the former Texas governor’s indictment for coercion of a public servant is a violation of his right to free speech and subsequently ruled in favor of dismissing the charge.

The charges against Perry, of which only one remains in light of the recent court order, stem from charges alleging that the Republican presidential hopeful abused his power while in office.

The second charge, misuse of the governor’s office, could proceed to trial, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Perry’s lead attorney, Tony Buzbee, was quoted by the LA Times as having said that the last charge is not only “hanging by a thread,” it’ll be “dismissed on its face.”

The remaining charge is hanging by a thread (…) and we are comfortable that once it is put before the court, it will be dismissed on its face.

Since Perry was indicted back in August, he’s repeatedly failed in his attempts to have the case against him dismissed. All the same, the longest-serving governor in the history of Texas has rarely seen the issue of his indictment surface during his time on the campaign trail.

Buzbee told News Radio 1200 WOAI that “the only remaining count is a misdemeanor, and raises the question of whether the exercise of a veto can ever be illegal in the absence of bribery.”

One down and one to go (…) We believe the only remaining count is a misdemeanor, and raises the question of whether the exercise of a veto can ever be illegal in the absence of bribery.

In other news, Ted Cruz took to the Senate floor to accuse his own Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, of being a liar.
