David Cameron: ‘We Will Not Start WW3 Over Ukraine’

Humanity has to have learned at least one lesson from history: Europe is not going to launch another war over Russia’s meddling in Ukraine, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday.

Cameron compared Russia’s behavior in Ukraine to Germany’s aggression in two World Wars – the annexation of Ukraine to Belgium in World War 1, and the annexation of Poland and Czechoslovakia in World War 2, The Telegraph reported.

We have seen an appalling loss of life and we have to ask ourselves — what more can we do? We are not about to launch a European war, we are not about to send the fleet to the Black Sea, we are not looking for a military confrontation, but what we should do is use the economic power that we have.

As the world remembers the 100th anniversary of WW1 this year, Cameron said European countries should have learned the lesson of previous wars that they must set firm boundaries or else Russia would put the same pressure on other nations that Germany did decades ago.

“This year we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of WW1 – and that war was about the right of a small country,  Belgium, not to be trampled on by its neighbors. We had to learn that lesson all over again in WW2 when the same thing happened to Poland and Czechoslovakia. In a way, this is what we are seeing today in Europe.”

Cameron warned that if the European nations fail to contain Russia now, it would have the effect of “destabilizing countries in the Baltic states, destabilizing Romania, and the neighbors of Russia will start to feel the pressure of what Vladimir Putin is doing.”

The U.S. and E.U. on Tuesday announced that they are set to impose stricter sanctions against Russia, including banning transactions with state-owned banks and restricting access to the latest defense technologies.

Cameron said the sanctions will continue until Russia behaves like any civilized country, BBC reported.
