Samsung Disables Windows Update, Turns It Back On

Samsung Laptops

After news broke on Tuesday of Samsung’s SW Update software disabling Windows Update by running a file named “Disable_Windowsupdate.exe,” the Korean tech firm has decided to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within what VentureBeat reports to be just a few days.

According to Samsung’s support team, Microsoft Update was disabled in order to prevent problems with the company’s laptops, however, disabling Windows Update in its entirety probably wasn’t the best move as the software is responsible for security updates to the Windows operating system as well as updates for the OS itself, software, drivers and more.

In particular, it is Samsung’s SW Update which disabled Windows Update. Samsung’s SW Update, which Gizmodo‘s Chris Mills referred to as “bloatware” in a recent report, is installed by default on all of Samsung’s personal computers.

A spokesperson for the company told VentureBeat that the company “has a commitment to security and we continue to value our partnership with Microsoft” and that they “will be issuing a patch through the Samsung Software Update notification process to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days.”

Samsung has a commitment to security and we continue to value our partnership with Microsoft (…) We will be issuing a patch through the Samsung Software Update notification process to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days. Samsung remains committed to providing a trustworthy user experience and we encourage customers with product questions or concerns to contact us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG.
